At the 2008 Brit Awards, Adele was featured in part of a medley of songs performed by Mark Ronson featuring various other artists including Daniel Merriweather and Amy Winehouse. The song Adele performed was "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face". In 2009, she did not perform but presented the award for Best British Male to Paul Weller, a friend and collaborator of hers. In 2011, Adele performed a heart-wrenching performance of "Someone Like You", which was incredibly well-received and was released on the UK iTunes Store. In 2012, not long after performing her comeback performance at the Grammys (after taking a short break due to a vocal hemorrhage), Adele performed "Rolling in the Deep" at the Brits.
At the 2012 Brit Awards, Adele won the award for 'Mastercard British Album of the Year' which is widely regarded as the most important award of the ceremony. Less than half a minute into her acceptance speech, host James Corden was forced to cut Adele off in order to introduce Blur who were due to perform an eleven minute set as they had won the 'Outstanding Contribution to Music' award and the ceremony was over-running. Adele was visibly annoyed and proceeded to flick her middle finger up into the air and the producers of the show came under fire from members of social networking website Twitter for the decision. Following the incident Adele said "I got cut off during my speech for Best Album and I flung the middle finger. But that finger was to the suits at the BRIT Awards, not to my fans." Adele received an apology from the show's organisers, who stated; "We send our deepest apologies to Adele that her big moment was cut short. We don't want this to undermine her incredible achievement in winning our night's biggest award. It tops off what's been an incredible year for her."
The action of sticking out the middle finger has also been performed by several other musical artists, including Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Eminem, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, and M.I.A. have all also performed the gesture, among several other celebrities, including athletes, for which it is a common gesture.
In 2013, Adele was nominated for two awards and won one for British Single of the Year; while she was unable to be there in attendance due to her rehearsing for her Oscars performance the same week, she did record a video of herself thanking her fans and made a self-referential comment about not wanting to interrupt the acceptance speech for Album of the Year; it was hinted Adele would win this award after it was revealed that they planned to make it up to Adele for interrupting her the previous year.
She was nominated for the Brits Global Success Award, along with One Direction and Mumford & Sons, but controversially lost the award to One Direction.
