Audio

"Right as Rain" appears as the eighth track on Adele's debut album, 19. It is preceded by "First Love" and followed by "Make You Feel My Love." "Right as Rain" was written by Adele, Nicholas Anthony Movshon, Leon Marcus Michels, Jeffrey Scott Silverman, and Clay Holley. The track was the final song written for 19.

"Right as Rain" was one of two songs considered to be released as the third single from 19.[1] Initially, it was given its own cover art, prompting speculation that it would be released as a single. Although the song was sent to radio as a promotional single[2], its scheduled release as a single was canceled at the last minute[3], and "Cold Shoulder" was ultimately chosen instead.

Background and composition[]

The song is speculated to be written about the ex-boyfriend who inspired the majority of the songs on the album. It was written in the key of F# Major.[4] On the album version of the track, Adele played the cowbell, while her touring guitarist and close friend Ben Thomas played the guitar.

Promotion[]

"Right as Rain" was included in the setlist of Adele's first two tours, An Evening With Adele and Adele Live. It was later included in her live releases, iTunes Live from SoHo and Live at the Royal Albert Hall.

The song was also performed on the American television series Ugly Betty. Adele's appearance on the show helped the episode to gain generally positive reviews.[5] The song was used in the season 2 episode of Lipstick Jungle entitled "Pandora's Box."[6] In 2016, the song was included in the film Bridget Jones's Baby; however it was not included on the film's soundtrack.[7][8]

It was the featured song on Adele's MySpace page during the 21 era.

Who wants to be right as rain
It's better when something is wrong
You get excitement in your bones
And everything you do's a game
When night comes and you're on your own
You can say I chose to be alone
Who want to be right as rain
It's harder when you're on top

'Cause when hard work don't pay off
And I'm tired, there ain't
No room in my bed
As far as I'm concerned
So wipe that dirty smile off
We won't be making up
I've cried my heart out
And now I've had enough of love

Who wants to be riding high
When you'll just crumble back on down
You give up everything you are
And even then you don't get far
They make believe that everything
Is exactly what it seems
But at least when you're at your worst
You know how to feel things

See when hard work don't pay off
And I'm tired, there ain't
No room in my bed
As far as I'm concerned
So wipe that dirty smile off
We won't be making up
I've cried my heart out
And now I've had enough of love

Go ahead and steal my heart
To make me cry again
'Cause it will never hurt
As much as it did then
When we were both right
And no one had blame
But now I give up
On this endless game

'Cause who wants to be right as rain
It's better when something is wrong
I get excitement in my bones
Even though everything's a strain
When night comes and I'm on my own
You should know I chose to be alone
So who wants to be right as rain
It's harder when you're on top

'Cause when hard work don't pay off
And I'm tired, there ain't
No room in my bed
As far as I'm concerned
So wipe that dirty smile off
We won't be making up
I've cried my heart out
And now I've had enough of...

No room in my bed
As far as I'm concerned
So wipe that dirty smile off
We won't be making up
I've cried my heart out
And now I've had enough of love
